My family has always (as far as I can recall:) had a set of World Book Encyclopedia's. The set we have is from the 1960's, and those were given to my mom at a yard sale quite a few years ago.
A couple weeks ago my brother and I obtained a 1985 set of World Book Encyclopedia's through a mowing customer. We were so excited to have a set that was 20 years newer (though they are 20 years old:).
My brother and I both love to flip through one of the books and read differant articles. Before we bought our first computer, we refered to our Encyclopedias as the "Bookshelf Computer".
Now, I like the computer/internet for the ability to quickly find information, but it is just not the same as a book. (In my opinion) With a hand held Encycopedia you can look up a certain thing, but your eye will catch another article that looks interesting and you can read a lot of simple information without ever clicking a button. It's just not the same with the computer.
The 21st volume of the World Book contains the letters w-z. So with the turn of a page you can read about water, whales, the wombat, West Virgina, X rays ,the yak, the Yantze River, yeast, Yellowstone, Zarie, Zambia, Zip codes and the Zither.
I like the computer, but it is just not the same as a book. The best book of all being the Bible, God's Written Word for man, for all time.
